Anthropic claude-for-legal vs Lawra
What Anthropic ships, how Lawra implements it, where we go further. Every skill from claude-for-legal mapped to its Lawra equivalent — with status, expected dates, and the specific advantages of our adaptation.
4d55f53 This page is updated on a recurring sync cadence — Monday weekly digest (light skim) + monthly full audit + triggered audits on material upstream changes. The 2026-06-07 audit cycle resolved five open strategic questions into four new Lawra product specs (Monitors, M&A Suite, Investigations, Skill Taxonomy) — see the README at planning/anthropic-legal/ in our repo for the audit trail and resolution pointers. The SHA pins the upstream HEAD commit our reference clone is currently at; the live audit uses `gh api` against upstream HEAD. What is Anthropic claude-for-legal?
claude-for-legal is Anthropic's open-source plugin marketplace for Claude Code, launched on 2026-04-21. It bundles 12 first-party legal plugins + 1 vendor plugin (CoCounsel Legal, powered by Thomson Reuters Westlaw) + 5 managed-agent cookbooks for scheduled background work. Each plugin contains skills (slash commands users invoke), agents (scheduled workflows), hooks, MCP server configurations, and a practice-profile template. The repository was the first signal that Anthropic is going beyond the Claude API and into vertical-specific Claude experiences — and legal was first. As of 2026-05-18 the repo has 80+ named skills across the plugins.
Advantages of claude-for-legal
- Category validation. The model maker shipping its own legal AI stack confirms agentic legaltech is a real, sustained market. The investor question 'is this category real?' is now answered by Anthropic itself.
- Best-in-class methodology. Anthropic's skill structures, disclaimer doctrines, source-attribution tiers ([settled] / [verify] / [verify-pinpoint]), and the 'NEVER conclude clear' guardrail on trademark clearance are top-shelf prompt engineering. Free R&D for everyone in the space.
- Open-source license. MIT-licensed. Anyone can extract, adapt, fork, or re-implement. Lawra has done exactly this with attribution — see commits at planning/anthropic-legal/skills/.
- Two deployment paths. Cowork plugins for consumer use + Managed Agents API for enterprise scheduled work — both from the same prompt source. Same architecture Lawra is converging toward.
- Practice-profile pattern. Every plugin's CLAUDE.md is a practice template that every skill reads. Validates Lawra's User Profile MVP direction (Phase 1 shipped 2026-05-15).
Shortcomings of claude-for-legal
- English only. 100% of the prompts, examples, and disclaimers are in English. No multilingual support. Excludes 90%+ of the global legal market.
- US common-law-centric. Citation conventions, statutory references, procedural framing all assume US (FRCP, UCC, state-specific tests, etc.). Civil-law jurisdictions (LatAm, continental EU, Asia ex-UK) need substantial adaptation.
- Cloud-only via Claude. Tied to Anthropic's API + Claude Code runtime. No sovereign / on-prem / multi-provider story. Excludes regulated industries with data-residency requirements.
- Tool-only, no education layer. The plugins do work but don't teach how to use AI in legal practice. Lawyers buying it cold have no on-ramp — 1,800 pages of Lawra's free education are exactly the layer claude-for-legal lacks.
- No simulators, no multi-persona, no Council. Single Claude voice across all plugins. No Trial Simulator, no Council of Jurists (38 voices), no Lawyer Debate (multi-persona). The distinctive Lawra products have no upstream equivalent.
Lawra coverage of claude-for-legal skills
Live or partial coverage represents what works in Lawra today (with our civil-law / multilingual / multi-persona improvements). Planned items have expected ship dates. Declined items reflect deliberate strategic decisions documented in the comparison table.
Full skill-by-skill comparison
Each row is one skill from claude-for-legal. The Lawra equivalent column links to our tool (when live). The Differences & advantages column explains how our implementation goes further — typically civil-law adaptation, multi-jurisdiction citations, multilingual UI, multi-persona, or honest retroactive-mode handling.

Configurable scope (business-only / business+IP / broad-with-trade-secrets), term, context (standalone / attached / pre-contract / DD / employee). Mutual or one-way. Optional IP-derivatives assignment clause. Outputs the NDA + a separate Analysis Report with risk, vulnerabilities, jurisdiction-specific notes. |

Lawra's response — four new product lines
The 2026-06-07 audit of claude-for-legal resolved five strategic questions into four new Lawra product directions. Each is now a drafted productization spec in our planning workspace, awaiting infrastructure go/no-go. Time and effort were not limiting criteria — quality, feature richness, and defensibility were.
Monitors — always-on legal-ops
Scheduled multi-agent productization of Monitors. The first piece of Lawra that works for you when you are not at the keyboard.
Cron + Pub/Sub queue + parallel sub-agents (regulatory feeds, dockets, contract renewals, vendor policy diffs) + diff-aware findings inbox + workflow handoff into the rest of the AI Suite. The third Lawra agentic-product template.
M&A Suite — coordinated deal workspace
Five tools (Diligence Issue Extraction, Tabular Review, Deal Team Summary, Material Contract Schedule, Integration Management) sharing one deal-scoped workspace from NDA through 100-day integration.
Lawra's deliberate move upmarket toward BigLaw transactions and Fortune 500 corp-dev. Wedge: cross-border deals where one leg is not English. The fourth Lawra agentic-product template.
Internal Investigations — privileged workflow
Six coordinated sub-tools (Intake & Triage, Interview Planning, Interview Execution, Evidence Preservation, Findings & Credibility, Report & Remediation) running on a long-running privileged matter workspace.
Green-field AI-native category — the AI-native legaltech players have all skipped it. Privilege-first architecture (Upjohn enforcement, audit trail, waiver-risk monitor) from day one. The fifth Lawra agentic-product template.
Skill Taxonomy — cross-site federation
Versioned JSON feed published at lawra.io/api/skill-taxonomy/, consumed by sister sites for cohort programs (Experience) and professional-profile evaluation (Skaills.io).
Closes the legal-career loop: learn (Lawra) → train (Experience) → certify (Skaills). The 13 law-student skills become the first content batch. Lawra owns the source of truth.
